Rock-Un-Rold Artists Coalition
Fear of FAILURE, fear of SUCCESS, FAME, FANS, EGO, TRENDS, DISPOSABILITY, CONTRACTS, CAMARADERIE, SUBSTANCE ABUSE; living with unrecognized MANIC DEPRESSIVE ILLNESS, MOOD DISORDERS…and SUICIDE.
ROCK-UN-ROLD is a non-profit fellowship of professional Musicians dedicated to solving their common problems by sharing their experiences gathered through success and failure. We are developing this program through our flagship documentary film Welcome to the Dream- The Rude Awakening of Rock Stardom, and the Rock-Un-Rold Artists Discussion Forum.
BECAUSE IT’S ALL ABOUT YOU:
The professional artists in our coalition lived every day of our careers with a set of psychological challenges that determined what business actions we took. But, unlike the varsity football team in school, we had no coaches…no one to explain the rules of the game; how to win…or how to lose. Through the survival of our mistakes, we learned the facts about ourselves; our thinking, our emotions, our actions and re-actions. We know what works…and what doesn’t. Because our survival is a GIFT, we must now GIVE BACK, and share our knowledge with YOU. We walked your path; we know what lies ahead.
NOTHING IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN TELLING US YOUR PROBLEMS:
Let’s do this the right way; YOU are going to write the script. How? By completing one of our 5-minute surveys on the right. This is NOT a test, it won’t be graded “right or wrong”; but we MUST know exactly what’s going on with you, and in what degree…For meaningful changes to take place, we can’t do any guessing. We also need to show some hard statistics to grantmaking foundations in the arts/ education. They do not understand the severity of collapse among us. Without their financial support, none of this happens…We can’t help you.
HOW DID THIS START? (a brief history)
Rock-Un-Rold was founded by recording artists Rat Skates (Founder of Overkill) and David Ellefson (Bassist, Megadeth). As a percussion instructor, Skates became very concerned when he listened to his young students tell him about their dreams of stardom. Realizing they had absolutely no help outside of lessons, and the dangers they face by emulating their idols’ path of mistakes, he conceptualized a musician- specific talk show that would connect artists by discussing real issues in the real world of rock ‘n roll. With David as joint moderator, they taped a demo shoot to pitch the television networks. Rock-Un-Rold was received with very high remarks and positive critique, but Viacom passed on the idea because, QUOTE: “It’s too intelligent…it won’t hold the attention spans of the 18-25 year old audience that we market to…if you want to really focus on some extreme drug use, sexual escapades, violence, embarrassments etc…then maybe we can talk more. The more tabloid style shock-value it has, the more we will be interested.”
“This is beyond my comprehension” said Skates. “Encouraging us to help exploit the collapse of other human beings instead of reaching out a helping hand just re-defines selfishness. The networks have the power to literally save thousands of young artists, but their only concern is keeping their job. They have made a conscious choice to perpetuate the problem by turning their back on millions of young people who need help. Big business has always been the most destructive to artists anyway; so we’ll do this ourselves…not as a company, but as a community, a family…and no one will ever care about you like your family does”.
